Founded in 1899 at its same current location in Herdecke an der Ruhr, the Schaufel- und Spatenfabrik Eckardt Sondermann & Co. On April 15, 1899, the cornerstone was laid, and on February 10, 1900, production and sales of shovels, spades, and plowing grates began. An important innovation was the pioneering rolling technique, where the spade blade and the spring could be made from a single piece of steel, resulting in more robust and durable tools. The conical rolling also produced a thinner blade at the cutting edge, making it self-sharpening.

Founder Emil Eckardt established the company, which has remained at its original location for over 120 years. Today, the brand offers a collection of professional-grade tools, including the Berliner Long Spade, Kieler Pointed Spade, Frankfurt Transport Shovel, Kassel Pick Axe, and Panzer Field Shovel.

The Berliner Long Spade is a full-size, rounded digging spade designed for efficiency and comfort when digging and lifting material. The ergonomically curved handle and slightly rounded cutting edge make it well-suited for loose, medium, and compact soils. The lacquered handle finish protects the wood against the elements and moisture, while the powder-coated head resists rust and provides a uniform appearance.

The spades and tools are crafted from premium-grade German C50 carbon steel that is heat-treated and oil-hardened. The bead-blasted heads help protect against corrosion during storage. The FSC-certified German ash handles are curved and ergonomic, ensuring a comfortable and efficient user experience. With a total length of 51 1/2 inches and a weight of 5 pounds, these tools are designed for ease of use, safe maneuvering, and powerful material movement.

To maintain the tools, users are advised to keep the steel heads oiled to prevent rust. If rusting does occur, steel wool or an abrasive can be used to remove it, followed by the application of the brand's Axe-Guard Head Oil, a protective and rust-preventative solution.
