Founded in 1899 in Herdecke an der Ruhr, Germany, the IDEALSPATEN Campus was established by Emil Eckardt as Schaufel- und Spatenfabrik Eckardt Sondermann & Co. GmbH. The company began production and sales of shovels, spades, and plowing grates on February 10, 1900. An important innovation was the revolutionary rolling technique that allowed the spade blade and spring to be made from a single piece of steel, resulting in more robust and durable tools with self-sharpening cutting edges.
Today, IDEALSPATEN continues its legacy of high-quality, German-crafted landscape tools. The product collection includes the Berliner Long Spade, Kieler Pointed Spade, Frankfurt Transport Shovel, Kassel Pick Axe, and Panzer Field Shovel. Each tool is professionally made, hand-crafted, and Built to Last.
The Heidelberg mattock is a versatile two-in-one tool, featuring a mattock hoe blade for cutting through roots and digging, as well as a rake grubber for loosening soil. The mattock's head is made from premium German C50 carbon steel, with a unique hammered finish that protects against rust and corrosion. The FSC-certified German ash handle is linseed oil-finished for long-term protection against the elements.
To maintain the tools, the steel heads should be kept oiled to prevent rust. If rust does occur, it can be removed using steel wool or an abrasive, followed by an application of Axe-Guard, a metal-protecting and rust-preventative oil.
IDEALSPATEN's commitment to tradition, sustainability, and innovation has made them the only industrial manufacturer of landscape tools in Germany. With a focus on quality, craftsmanship, and performance, these tools are designed to be passed down for generations.
